VONA/KVERT DAILY REPORT
Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles Volcanic Activity

January 21, 2014, all time is UTC

SHEVELUCH VOLCANO (CAVW #1000-27-)
56.64 N, 161.32 E; Elevation 10768 ft (3283 m), the dome elevation ~8200 ft (2500 m)
Aviation Color Code is ORANGE

Eruption of the volcano continues: a new lava dome continues to extrude on the north-western part of the lava dome, moderate ash explosions up to 13,100-19,800 ft (4-6 km) a.s.l., strong fumarolic activity and incandescence of the dome summit and hot avalanches accompanies this process. Satellite data showed a thermal anomaly over the volcano. Ash plume rose up to 7-8 km a.s.l. and extended to the north-east and west, and later to north of the volcano.

KARYMSKY VOLCANO (CAVW #1000-13-)
54.05 N, 159.44 E; Elevation 4874 ft (1486 m)
Aviation Color Code is ORANGE

There was no seismic data by technical reasons. Satellite data showed a thermal anomaly over the volcano.

BEZYMIANNY VOLCANO (CAVW #1000-25-)
55.97 N, 160.6 E; Elevation 9453 ft (2882 m)
Aviation Color Code is YELLOW

No detectable seismicity. Moderate gas-steam activity was observed. Satellite data showed the volcano was quiet.

PLOSKY TOLBACHIK VOLCANO (CAVW #1000-24-)
55.83 N, 160.39 E; Elevation 10119 ft (3085 m)
Aviation Color Code is YELLOW

Moderate seismic activity of the volcano continues. Satellite data showed a weak thermal anomaly over the northern area of Tolbachinsky Dol.

GORELY VOLCANO (CAVW #1000-07-)
52.56 N, 158.03 E; Elevation 5996 ft (1828 m)
Aviation Color Code is YELLOW

Seismic activity of the volcano continues. Moderate gas-steam activity was observed. Satellite data showed the volcano was quiet.

In Russia, KVERT, on behalf of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (IVS) FED RAS, is responsible for providing information on volcanic activity to international air navigation services for the airspace users.

The real-time seismic monitoring for 11 Kamchatkan volcanoes is producing of the Kamchatkan Branch of Geophysical Survey (KBGS) RAS: http://www.emsd.ru.
The daily satellite monitoring for 36 volcanoes of Kamchatkan and Northern Kuriles are producing of Alaska Volcano Observatory (http://www.avo.alaska.edu/) and KVERT.

Aviation Colour Codes

GREEN

Volcano is in normal, non-eruptive state

or, after a change from a higher level:

Volcanic activity considered to have ceased, and volcano reverted to its normal, non-eruptive state.

YELLOW

Volcano is experiencing signs of elevated unrest above known background levels.

or, after a change from higher level:

Volcanic activity has decreased significantly but continues to be closely monitored for possible renewed increase.

ORANGE

Volcano is exhibiting heightened unrest with increased likelihood of eruption.

   or,

Volcanic eruption is underway with no or minor ash emission.
[specify ash-plume height if possible]

RED

Eruption is forecast to be imminent with significant emission of ash into the atmosphere likely.

  or,

Eruption is underway with significant emission of ash into the atmosphere.
[specify ash-plume height if possible]
